Running at Night Changes Something
There's something about heading out to run after dark that switches on a different mode. Less heat, fewer people watching, more focus. The Herbalife Night Run Son Moix takes that idea further: 7 kilometres at night through the streets of Palma, with RCD Mallorca's stadium as the centrepiece.
It was March 28th. Start time: 8:00 PM. What I thought would be a relaxed urban 7K turned out to be one of the most enjoyable race experiences I can remember.
What Is the Herbalife Night Run
The Night Run isn't just a race in Mallorca. It's a national circuit that organises night events around some of Spain's most well-known football stadiums. The Palma edition centres around Son Moix Stadium, home of RCD Mallorca, which means part of the route literally passes through the stadium grounds.
The course winds through the streets surrounding the stadium, with start and finish at the same point, and has a distinctive character you don't expect from an urban race.
The Elevation Nobody Warns You About
Here's what nobody tells you when you sign up for an "urban 7K night race": there's considerably more elevation than the map suggests.
The course has a pronounced up-down character that breaks your rhythm if you're not expecting it. The climbs aren't brutal, but they add up. In the first kilometres, when adrenaline takes over, it's easy to go out too fast and pay for it later.
My advice for anyone doing this race: control the start. The night atmosphere, the music and the other runners are going to push you harder than you should go. The first 2 km are deceptive.
The Feeling of Running Into Son Moix
The most special moment of the race, perhaps the hardest to explain if you haven't experienced it, is when the route takes you inside the stadium.
Running through the tunnels of Son Moix, with the lights on and the noise amplified by the stadium structure, is one of those experiences you won't easily forget. It doesn't matter whether you support Mallorca or not. There's something instinctive about crossing that space you usually only see from the stands. As if for a moment the pitch belongs to you.
It's the kind of moment you won't find at any Sunday morning race. And that alone is reason enough to sign up.
Night Races Favour Performance
Beyond the experience, night races have something working in your favour: temperatures are lower, the body responds better and the perception of effort shifts. The competitive night atmosphere has a different energy, more focused and electric.
It's no coincidence that many runners find their best feelings at this type of event. The combination of cool air, adrenaline and a course with genuine personality creates the perfect conditions to truly enjoy the run.
Is It Worth Signing Up?
Absolutely.
Worth it if:
- You want an experience different from Sunday morning races
- You're motivated by the urban night atmosphere and music
- You're looking for a 7K with some real challenge
- You want the unique experience of running into a top-flight football stadium
Keep in mind:
- The course is not flat: there's more up-and-down than you'd expect
- The mass city start can be chaotic in the first few metres
- Pick up your bib the day before (at Carrefour Palma)
The Herbalife Night Run circuit has stops at several Spanish stadiums throughout the year. If you missed the Mallorca edition, there are more opportunities ahead, and they're well worth it.
